Asthma

Anti-inflammatory Reliever (AIR)

Combination ICS-formoterol (LABA) prn OR SABA-ICS PRN w/w/o maintenance ICS containing therapy

ICS formoterol inhalers are not FDA-approved for use as rescue reliver therapy in the US

PARTICS – patient activated reliever-triggered inhaled corticosteroids – follow current asthma treatment plan and take ICS when using PRN SABA as rescue / reliever therapy

take one puff of ICS for each puff of PRN SABA inhaler or five puffs of ICS after using a SABA nebulizer treatment

ICS only inhalers are not FDA-approved for use as rescue/reliever therapy in the United States

MART – maintenance and Reliever Therapy

One inhaler for both maintenance and rescue/reliever therapy

Use combination ICS-formoterol as both maintenance ans PRN rescue / reliever

This approach does not include use of a SABA-only inhaler or a SABA-ICS inhaler as rescue/reliever and cannot be used w/ combinations of ICS w/ non-formoterol LABAs

ICS-formoterol inhalers are not FDA-approved for use as MART in the US

ICS inhaled corticosteroid as part of rescue / reliever therapy

Inflammation – asthma w/ chronic long lasting inflammation daily maintenance inhaler w/ ICS aids controlling inflammation and prevents symptoms and flare ups

Rescue reliever therapy for symptoms rescue inhaler SABA temporarily relieve asthma symptoms, SABA alone does not address problem of inflammation

Both symptoms and inflammation treated w/ rescue reliever therapy supported by asthma experts
